Best Practices for Conducting Fire Alarm Testing in Different Environments

Posted in: Testing Training

Fire alarms save lives, but only if they are fully functioning and building occupants know how to respond when they hear them.

The British Standard BS 5839-6: 2019 fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings specifies that fire alarms in commercial premises should be tested on a weekly basis to ensure that they are operating effectively.

Additionally, all alarm systems should be inspected every 6 months by an independent specialist to ensure that no defects exist and to maintain the system in optimal condition, and fire drills should be performed on an ad hoc basis to ensure that building occupants know how to respond and do so effectively.

Notify building occupants and monitoring companies

It is essential that building occupants and any monitoring companies know when a fire alarm will be tested to prevent unnecessary evacuations and the costs associated with unintentional emergency response callouts.

Use appropriate tools and equipment

Fire alarm tests should be performed only by trained personnel who are equipped with the necessary tools, PPE and equipment to do so safely. The test equipment used must be compatible with the system being tested and calibrated to ensure accurate results.

Perform the test

The fire alarm systems should be tested using the appropriate test equipment and in accordance with standard operating procedures. The smoke detector should be triggered and the alarm panel monitored to ensure that it activates correctly. The test operator must also ensure that all building occupants are alerted via local sounders.

Reset the alarm

The alarm system requires a reset after each activation, regardless of whether it was successful or not. This reset should be done following the manufacturer’s instructions or by using the reset button if it is present on the control panel. It is important for the test operator to ensure that the system has been correctly reset before leaving the premises. This process is crucial for maintaining the system’s functionality and reliability.

Document the test

All fire alarm tests must be documented for regulatory compliance and to maintain business records. Any issues or deviations must also be recorded along with a recommended course of action to remedy them.
