In 2016, the UK government introduced a rise in the minimum wage for over 25s and called this new statutory minimum: The National Living Wage. But there is still a gap between the amount all employers have to pay by law and the real Living Wage that meets the cost of living. That’s why thousands of UK employers have voluntarily committed to going further - because it’s fair.
The real Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually, based on the cost of living in the UK. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. It is currently £10.90 in the UK, with a higher rate of £11.95 for London, reflecting the higher costs of living in the capital. Since 2011, the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 450,000 people and put over £2 billion extra into the pockets of low paid workers. Being accredited helps us to demonstrate that we are a responsible employer that values our people and best practice.
