XTR2 site visit: Fellhornbahn Cable Car, Germany

Posted in: Testing News

Nothing beats a proper field test to put your product through its paces!  You can try to predict countless scenarios; how people will use your products and what obstacles they might face.  Equally, you can spend hours in a lab testing, but nothing beats the learning and feedback you get from engineers using the product onsite.  It’s the result of these site visits which prove the real test and the best insights as to how the product performs.

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to have been invited to some fantastic sites and locations for product trials, and recently Oliver Doerle had the privilege to spend a day with a team from Bosch to gain feedback on our new Testifire XTR2 - at a site that was equally beautiful and as it was challenging.

As locations go this one falls into the ‘truly amazing category’, it’s not every day we’re invited to test our products on the top of a mountain! At nearly 2000 metres (6500 ft) altitude, the Fellhornbahn Cable Car in Oberstdorf, Germany is a stunning location with some truly spectacular views.  As beautiful as the Fellhornbahn Cable Car was, this site also had everything you want from a field test location. As well as the setting, there were also plenty of detectors, nearly 150 in total, spread over more than 1000 metres – all at altitude.

With the height came another challenge, and it was fantastic to be able to see our Solo access poles put to test and get a reminder of the importance placed on them when accessing detectors at height.   Of course, accessing detectors at height is nothing new, but testing at height with an enormous snow plough or a massive cable wheel as an extra obstacle is! Here, Testifire XTR2’s tiltable test cup made all the difference, allowing easy alignment with the detector to support rapid testing.

The site also had many cramped and dark spaces where the automatic torch came in handy, literally providing the light needed to see the detectors and align the test head.   Less dramatic but quite unusual was that we even had some underfloor detectors, which usually would were all hard to access and test. Again, Testifire XTR2’s tiltable test cup at a 90-degree angle made for easy alignment and testing.

A big take-away from testing at this site was how much quicker it was test with Testifire XTR2, compared to the previous generation of Testifire.  Speed-of-testing equates to productivity and the work on optimising the generation of smoke and heat stimuli has clearly paid off.

A big thank you to the service team from the Bosch Energy and Building Solutions for choosing such as an interesting and diverse site for a field test.  It was great to experience Testifire XTR2 in use and gain first-hand feedback from those that use it the most.

Finally, we’re always keen to gain feedback from the teams using our products and visit new sites, it could be a historic building, a skyscraper, an airport or even a marine vessel - the more interesting and unique the better!  If you currently manage such a site and think you could support us with a site visit, please get in touch.
