BS 5839-1:2025 – A New Era for Competency in Fire Safety

The fire safety industry has just reached a major milestone. On 29 April 2025, the updated BS 5839-1:2025 Code of Practice was officially published —replacing the 2017 version with immediate effect. This update brings with it a significant and long-awaited development: for the first time ever, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is formally referenced in this Code of Practice.

Why This Matters

BS 5839-1 is the cornerstone for the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises. It ensures systems are not only compliant but also effective in real-world emergencies. The 2025 update reinforces the importance of competency—and now, explicitly includes CPD in Clause 3.13, which defines a competent person as:

“Suitably trained and qualified by knowledge and practical experience, and provided with the necessary instructions, to enable the required task(s) to be carried out correctly.

NOTE: Maintenance of competence is likely to require continuing professional development (CPD).”

This is a game-changer. It sets a new benchmark for fire safety professionals and highlights the need for ongoing learning to stay current with evolving standards, technologies, and best practices.

CPD: More Than a Buzzword

CPD has long been a requirement for Fire Risk Assessors and Fire and Rescue Services, but its inclusion in BS 5839-1:2025 signals a broader industry shift. It’s now a formal expectation for anyone involved in fire safety.

In a fast-changing environment, CPD provides a structured, auditable path to maintaining competence. It’s not just about ticking boxes — it’s about staying sharp, informed, and ready to protect lives and property.
